Saint-Louis,

INTRODUCTION
Situated at the Northern most border of Sengal , St Louis is the
old capital of French Occidentale area , built half on an island
and half on the main land joined only by Eiffels bridge ,the city
still bears testiment to its prestigious colonial past. It is
the oldest European city on the West African coast and was one
the main route into the African continent from Europe.
A BRIEF HISTORY
Founded
in 1659 by Norman Loius Caullier { named after the then king Louis
XIV } . It became the Capital of French Occidental Africa { AOF
} from 1895 to 1902 and as such a major route for Trade , Commerce
and exploration. At that time AOF included Senegal , Mauritania,
The Sudan , Guinea and the Ivory Coast , even after the break
up of the AOF , St Louis remained the capital of Senegal until
1957 and the Capital of Mauritania from 1920 – 1960 . Often
called the ‘‘ capital of good taste’’
and the ‘‘capital of North Africa’’ ,
St Louis also has a reputation as an intellectual centre for the
French .
More
recently St Louis has been classified as a Humanitarian centre
for the UN , and host a world famous International Jazz festival
. The main economy is Fishing and Agriculture with a major irrigation
project rejuvenating a lot of the coastal area. The development
of Tourism is a prime objective of the city and major investment
has been ploughed into the infrastucture , offering better amenities
for both Citizens and Tourists alike.
